Over me

My Name is Margaret Gatere, born and raised in kenya, worked in Qatar and Oman as a hairstylist designer, passionate about design and creative.

Currently in Kenya but flexible to move – I am hairstylist and a fashion designer

I was born and raised in Ruiru, the daughter of a hairdresser and a mason.

There was no safety net. Just absolute poverty, rejection, and learning early how to stand alone.

I was the straight-A student who didn’t fit the picture—tall, dark, thin, awkward in a world that didn’t know what to do with me. People stared. Some dismissed me. I kept going anyway.

As a teenager, I found fire in fashion and modeling—a quiet certainty that I was meant for more than survival. Then life tested me again. I became a teen mom. Then a single mom. Responsibility arrived before comfort. Strength before softness.

I didn’t disappear. I rose.

Fashion became my language and my escape. It carried me beyond borders—to Dubai, Qatar, and Oman. I created my own line, G__RAREBREED COLLECTION, built from resilience, difference, and refusal to shrink.

I became the first Black model featured in Vogue Arabia. I represented Qatar Japa Muse Beauty Pageant (2018). I appeared in Kenya Airways’ Inflight Magazine (2015), Msafiri, and Karibu.

Behind the scenes, I led too—becoming the first volunteer Head Dresser at Emerge Fashion Show in Qatar, and later serving in Qatar United Fashion (2022).

Nothing about this journey was handed to me.

Every step was earned—with courage, exhaustion, faith, and grit.

Now, I’m building more than clothes. I’m building legacy—launching my website and expanding G__RAREBREED COLLECTION into a global voice for those who were told they were “too different.”

I am proof that origin does not define destiny.

I am not a trend.

I am a rare breed.
